What is a long parts AS/RS?

A long parts AS/RS is an automated storage and retrieval system built for material that will not fit standard racking: pipes, bars, tubes, beams, extrusions, and profiles. Each item is stored in a full-length tray rather than on open shelving, and an extractor or automated carrier delivers the requested tray to an access station, so nothing gets dragged off a rack by hand.

Aerospace, construction, automotive, metal fabrication, and custom manufacturing operations rely on it wherever stock is long, heavy, or easy to damage. It reclaims the floor space cantilever racking spreads down an aisle, turns retrieval into a single request, and takes the lifting out of a task that regularly injures people.

Here is what a long parts AS/RS does for your operation:

  • Maximizes Space

Stores long items in compact vertical towers or horizontal bays, reducing clutter and freeing up valuable floor space.

  • Eliminates Manual Lifting

Automated retrieval protects operators from injuries caused by handling heavy or awkward items.

  • Improves Material Traceability

Protects long parts from bending, scratching, or misplacement, while providing accurate inventory tracking.

  • Customizable for Length and Weight

Trays, compartments, and extractor configurations can be tailored to the size, weight, and picking frequency of your materials.

  • Integrates with Software

Fully integrates with fabrication and shop floor workflows, feeding directly into cutting, machining, or assembly stations.

Common problems solved with Long Parts AS/RS

These systems streamline the storage of oversized materials without compromising on speed, safety, or accessibility.

  • Bar stock, tube, and beam stored on cantilever racking is swallowing an entire aisle of warehouse floor space.
  • Retrieving a single 20-foot length takes two people, a forklift, and a spotter, and it is where manual handling injuries happen.
  • Long parts come back bent, scratched, or bundled with the wrong profile because they lean unsupported in open racking.
  • Nobody knows what is actually in stock: remnants and offcuts disappear into the back of a rack and get reordered anyway.
  • Operators walk the shop floor to fetch material instead of the material arriving staged at the saw or machining center.
